Leaky school buildings case settled

The Ministry of Education has reached a settlement with James Hardie over a leaky buildings case.

A claim was lodged with the High Court in April against manufacturers that had supplied materials for use in school buildings where there were problems later with weather-tightness.

The ministry and James Hardie have issued a joint statement, saying a settlement has been reached in relation to claims against the company's two New Zealand subsidiaries.

Details of the settlement are not being released, but associate education minister Nikki Kaye says it includes the supply of certain James Hardie products.

She says the agreement strengthens the Government's ability to significantly address weather-tightness problems in schools, without the need for lengthy court action.

However, Ms Kaye says legal action is continuing against two other parties.

Those companies have been named as Carter Holt Harvey and CSR Building Products.
