Fiji's House of Representatives has passed a motion seeking to deploy armed soldiers at three key locations until June next year.
The Daily Post reports the government wants to continue stationing armed soldiers to provide security at the prison island of Nukulau, the Monasavu hydro electricity dam and the adjoining Wailoa power station.
The home affairs minister, Joketani Cokanasiga, says the continuing deployment of soldiers in Monasavu is still necessary to secure essential national installations located in the area.
He says the attorney general's office is drafting legislation relating to the security of installations such as telecommunications sites, aircraft flights, water pumping, treatment and storage facilities and sewerage systems.
