The Samoa Government has invited proposals from independent power suppliers in a bid to find a cheaper means of providing power to consumers.
Two companies have responded but the Minister of Works, Transport and Infrustructure says their costs are much higher than those offered by the Electric Power Corporation.
At present, 70% of electricity comes from diesel while 30% was produced from hydro.
Apolima island is powered solely by solar energy.
The government was also looking at alternatives sources such as wind and coconut oil.
Wind power is being trialed at Afulilo and Aleipata.
