Solving the human waste problem on our highest mountain

22:18 pm on 17 May 2024

University of Canterbury researchers Chris North and Toni Torepe have been working with the New Zealand Alpine Club and Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua to address the issue of how mountaineers dispose of their waste when on Aoraki Mount Cook.

Human waste is currently flown off the sacred mountain, at a cost greater than the income from hut fees.

They join Emile Donovan.
