A French mission looking into the disappearance of the French explorer Laperouse says it has deepened its understanding of what happened to his fleet in Solomon Islands in a cyclone in 1788.

The French navigator disappeared along with his whole fleet.

The mission made up of 120 experts has just returned to New Caledonia, claiming to have established how one of the ships was destroyed.

Its anchor was found implanted in the reef and nearly 160 items retrieved from its submerged hull.
