Police are trying to track down a motorist whose vehicle struck a pedestrian in central Wellington on Monday night.

The collision occurred on Ghuznee Street around 10.50pm.

The Terrace Tunnel was closed that night, so all traffic was diverted onto Ghuznee Street, Detective Senior Sergeant Rachael Boyd said.

"The victim remains in Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.

"The victim was on the road at the time, and the driver may not have been aware of what they hit."

Police were appealing for the driver to contact them.

It was possible their vehicle had suffered some damage in the incident.

Boyd also wanted to hear from anyone who travelled along the street around that time, particularly if they have dashcam footage.

"CCTV is crucial in assisting investigators and we ask that anyone in the area please review your footage and contact police if you haven't already spoken to us."

Police can be contacted via 105, or using the website, clicking on 'update report'.
