Ko fired a seven under par 65 at the Gainbridge tournament, her first event back after her New Year break.

Playing on her home course Ko opened her round with an eagle before firing six birdies and a bogey.

American Nelly Korda and Nanna Koerstz Madsen of Denmark are tied for second with another shot back to a group of seven players tied for fourth.

It's almost three years since the 23-year-old last won a tournament, but she finished 2020 in strong form with nine top-20 finishes and didn't miss a cut.

This is the start of Ko's eighth year on the tour.

England eliminated from Test Championship

Axar Patel claimed an 11-wicket match haul in the day-night test, dashing the tourists' hopes of making the final of the inaugural World Test Championship in June.

On a viciously turning track, England were shot out for 81 in the second innings, their lowest ever total against India, who had suffered their own first-innings collapse on a chaotic day at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Chasing 49 for victory in the spin-dominated, low-scoring contest, India overwhelmed the target without losing a wicket to go 2-1 up in the four-test series.

The hosts need a draw in the final test, also in Ahmedabad from March 4, to reach the WTC final.

If India lose the fourth test, Australia will play New Zealand in the June 18-22 contest.

Earlier, resuming on 99-3, India looked on course for a handy first-innings lead but Root (5-8) and Leach (4-54) wreaked havoc with the pink ball.

Rohit Sharma top scored for India with 66 but the hosts lost their last seven wickets for 31 runs.

Breakers beaten again

The New Zealand Breakers made a bright start against the Sydney Kings, but couldn't sustain the form as they were beaten 96-78 in their Australian National Basketball League game in Melbourne.

With brothers Tai and Corey Webster starting together for the first time the Breakers shot out to a 13-point lead into the first quarter.

However it all started to unravel not long after as poor defence let the Kings back into the game.

The Breakers scored just six points in the second quarter and were down by ten at half time.

"It would be a little bit embarrassing for me to talk about the first quarter when this was another game where we weren't competitive," coach Dan Shamir said.

"The first thing we need to improve is our one-on-one defence... the way to stop the bleeding or not to bleed any further is to take it a bit personally on a one-on-one level.

"The bottom line is it's tough, the hole gets deeper and we will fight harder."

Corey Webster top scored with 24 points.

The Breakers remain at the foot of the table with one win from seven games, while Sydney are fourth.

The Breakers next game is against Adelaide tomorrow.

Six Nations game off

France's Six Nations rugby game against Scotland has been postponed after another player tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number infected to 11.

The Six Nations said in a statement that its Testing Oversight Group had met to review the situation in the French camp and unanimously recommended the postponement of Sunday's (Monday morning NZ time) match.

The statement added that the Six Nations would look to reschedule the fixture and would communicate the date in due course.

The French federation had said earlier on Thursday that the entire French squad was in isolation and training had been suspended ahead of the game.

France lead the standings with two wins from two games, ahead of Wales on points difference, as they seek to lift the Six Nations title for the first time since 2010, the year of their last Grand Slam.

Scotland upset England at Twickenham in their opening game of this year's competition but then lost by one point at home to Wales in their second match.

Ethan Mitchell has beaten international team-mate Sam Webster to claim the sprint title at the National Track Cycling Championships in Invercargil.

Mitchell set a new championship record in qualifying and then beat Webster 2-0 in the decider.

Fellow Aucklander Sam Dakin beat Southland's Bradly Knipe in a deciding ride for bronze.

"It's never easy, especially with the depth that we have in New Zealand now,' Webster said.

Shaane Fulton of Tasman won the women's sprint, Waikato-Bay of Plenty's Bryony Botha claimed the elite women's 3000m individual pursuit and Olivia Ray of Auckland won the elimination title.

Brisbane to consider another stadium for Olympics

Australia may build a new stadium to host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2032 Olympics if Brisbane secures the Games, Queensland state Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has said.

Brisbane took a major step towards being named 2032 hosts after the International Olympic Committee said the city had been picked as the preferred partner to start talks for the Games.

"There is the option of one new big venue in terms of where we would have the opening ceremony ... but we may use Carrara as well," Palaszczuk said.

Carrara Stadium on the Gold Coast, south of Brisbane, was used to host the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Australian Olympic Committee President John Coates said the bid had earmarked 25,000-seat Carrara for the track and field events in 2032 but added that venues needed to be finalised.

Brisbane already has two major inner city stadiums -- the 42,000-seat Brisbane Cricket Ground, known as the "Gabba", and the 52,500-capacity Lang Park.

The Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane have been earmarked as event and village hubs.

Rafa out of Dutch tournament

World men's tennis number two Rafa Nadal has withdrawn from next week's Rotterdam Open due to a back injury.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner has been struggling with a back issue since the build-up to the Australian Open and was forced to skip Spain's ATP Cup ties earlier this month.

Nadal has not played in Rotterdam since 2009, and world number three Daniil Medvedev will replace him as the top seed at tournament, which will run from March 1-7.

Despite the injury, Nadal did not drop a set at the Australian Open until the quarter-finals, where he was knocked out by Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas last week.
