Baby born on flight from Apia to Auckland

15:20 pm on 19 March 2009

A baby born on an international flight to New Zealand is doing well, as airport police continue to investigate whether it was abandoned.

The woman gave birth on a Pacific Blue flight with 150 passengers on board.

It was from the Samoan capital of Apia to Auckland, which landed at 5:20am on Thursday.

Police at Auckland international airport were notified shortly before 7am.

At this stage no explanation's been given for the apparent delay between touchdown and advising the police.

The mother and child have been taken to Middlemore Hospital, where they are in a maternity ward and described as being well.

Police are looking into a suggestion the child was abandoned, but are not issuing any further details.

Pacific Blue has not been available to clarify its requirements for women flying while pregnant - and is not commenting on other circumstances around the birth.
