Weekend ban wanted on cars in Queen Street

18:45 pm on 22 December 2010

An Auckland lobby group wants cars to be banned from Queen Street at weekends.

The Campaign for Better Transport presented its five year plan to revitalize urban areas to Auckland Council's transport committee on Monday.

It called on the Council to 'transform' the inner-city, saying that making Queen Street pedestrian-only for part of the week would make it more vibrant and appealing.

The group also wants a one-way system running through the Western CBD, on Hobson and Nelson Streets, to be made two-way.

Councillors have recommended the plan be referred to the Auckland Transport Council organisation.
