University events centre still closed after collapse

13:03 pm on 17 July 2012

An events centre at the University of Canterbury remains closed, following a flooring collapse during a concert on Friday.

The $2.5 million centre was built this year as a temporary facility for student association events.

The university says the building will remain closed until structural engineers and the Department of Labour have completed investigations.

About 900 people were in the events centre when the floor gave way. All were evacuated safely.

The university is ruling out overcrowding as a cause, as the building has a capacity of up to 1400 people.
