China and PNG forge ever closer links

15:11 pm on 11 July 2016

China and Papua New Guinea signed agreements over the weekend to establish direct flights to Beijing which would pave the way for the PNG tourism sector

Prime Minister Peter O'Neill had also made it clear to President Xi Jinping that PNG will continue to encourage Chinese companies to invest there.

The Post Courier reports that Mr Xi wants to encourage more tourists from China to come and visit PNG.

To do that, he said China would work with the PNG's tourism sector.

During the same meetings in Beijing the PNG prime minister said his country respects China's position on the disputed claims over the South China Sea.

In a joint press release both countries asserted China's "legitimate and lawful rights and interest in the South China Sea, and its right to independently choose the means of dispute settlement in accordance with law."
