American Samoa baby born the night of the storm is named after Cyclone Rene

20:42 pm on 18 February 2010

A baby girl delivered last Friday night at the American Samoan main LBJ Hospital has been named after Cyclone Rene.

The hospital's emergency team had been camping at the hospital in preparation for the cyclone that night.

The head of the delivery department, Dr John Ah Ching, says the mother came in with complications and having all the necessary staff present may have saved the baby's life.

Meanwhile American Samoa's Governor Togiola Tulafono is asking the Fono to approve 100,000 US dollars for relief and recovery efforts following Cyclone Rene.

The governor says Manua sustained damages to roads as a result of landslides following heavy rain during the cyclone.

In addition, inital assessments show substantial crop damage, which may result in food shortages.

The money is to come from the off island investments account of the American Samoa government.
