Cyclone Niko downgraded

13:01 pm on 24 January 2015

Alerts are being lifted in French Polynesia as the season's first tropical cyclone has been downgraded to a depression.

Tropical Cyclone Niko, which has been a Category One storm, traversed between the Society Islands and the Tuamotu archipelago after forming two days ago.

The storm caused minimal damage but forced school closures among others on Moorea yesterday as it passed the more populated islands.

The system has been moving south, passing to the west of Rapa.
