Kodi Nikorima says he was told by Brisbane he was keeping a halves spot warm for teenage star Tom Dearden, prompting his hasty NRL move to the Warriors.
Kiwi international halfback Nikorima fronted a media conference an hour before his new team's match against Newcastle in Auckland on Sunday, explaining his switch was simply about job security.
Nikorima said the certainty of a three-season deal he signed on Friday was preferable to the uncertainty of staying at Red Hill, where Broncos coach Anthony Seibold was looking at restoring him to his former utility role.
"Now there's a future for myself in a position I want to play," he said.
"The Broncos couldn't offer me anything like that and I'm just thankful it's all done.
"I know where I am now and where I'll be for the next couple of years.
"There's no animosity there between me and the Broncos, they were pretty up front and honest in saying Tom was probably their future half there."
Nikorima's only disappointment was the leaking that took place throughout the rapid-fire negotiations with the Warriors this week, meaning he didn't get a chance to consult with family and friends about the move.
The 25-year-old was nevertheless grateful for the early release.
Nikorima said there was interest in his services from other clubs but the Warriors were the most eager, having approached him soon after Shaun Johnson departed last November.
However, Nikorima bristled at a suggestion he is charged with replacing the classy Johnson, saying he would bring his own style to Auckland and work alongside seasoned half Blake Green.
"I don't see it as replacing Shaun. What Shaun's done here is incredible," he said.
"I don't want to compare myself to him. Nor will I compare myself to the past players like Stacey Jones and what-not.
"I've come here to be who I am.
"I'm my own player, I'm Kodi Nikorima, I'm no one else and I won't ever try to be anyone else."
