Australia says troops will be out of Solomon Islands by late August

The Australian government says almost all of its troops serving in Solomon Islands will return home by the end of August.

An announcement from the Australian defence and foreign ministers says a company of medical personnel left the country this week, and another contingent of 84 engineers, maintenance staff and drivers will leave on Monday next week.

The ministers say by the end of August, around 100 troops will remain in the Solomons, where they will continue to work with and protect the local civilian police force.
