Another $13m for quake counselling and support

The Government says it will fund another $13 million over the next two years for counselling and support services in Canterbury.

Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says the Government has provided $20 million for community and non-government organisations in Canterbury since the first big earthquake to affect the region on 4 September 2010.

It was followed by a fatal quake in February last year and there have been numerous tremors since.

Ms Bennett says its clear there is an ongoing need for delivery of these services.

She says she has heard reports that some people are still suffering, and in some cases are in a worse situation now than a year ago.

The minister says she wants to see the extra funding put toward counselling services and for social service agencies.
