MasterCard says a survey on financial literacy has found New Zealanders have the best basic money-management skills in the Asia-Pacific region.

The credit card company polled customers in 16 countries on three aspects of financial literacy: basic money-management skills, investment knowledge and financial planning.

New Zealand's overall financial literacy index rose one point to 74 points from a year ago, ahead of Singapore on 72 points.

Taiwan, Australia and Hong Kong were all third highest on 71 points. Japan, with a score of 57 points, came last.
