The massive blaze in a car yard in the South Auckland suburb of Papakura has been brought under control by firefighters.
Fire and Emergency were called to a car yard on Parker Street in Papakura at 3.10pm.
A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said there would be a significant fire service presence at the scene overnight.
A fire investigator will arrive tomorrow to look into the cause.
Earlier in the day, the spokesperson said there were burning cars and buildings and the fire was about 100 metres by 80 metres. About 21 fire trucks were at the scene at one point.
An emergency mobile alert has been sent out downgrading the risk to people in the vicinity, who had been told to stay indoors and to shut their windows.
However, people are being warned if they do go outside, there is still lingering smoke.
