A new population of the rare black mudfish has been found north of Auckland.
Auckland Council says fish enthusiasts from Auckland Zoo and the Mahurangi Technical Institute discovered the population in the Te Arai wetlands.
It is the third discovery of a population of the species in the Auckland region.
The black mudfish is a unique member of New Zealand's native fish fauna.
It can survive in wetlands during the dry summer months by burying itself in the mud.
