The Northern Marianas customs authority has seized 4.5 kilograms of liquid methamphetamine smuggled in glitter lava lamps.

The Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Division of Customs and Biosecurity estimated the street value of the illegal drug was US$1.8 million. Methamphetamine sells for US$400 a gram on Saipan.

Customs said two Chinese nationals had been arrested in relation to the seizure and were being held at the Department of Corrections.

The pair allegedly tried to smuggle the lava lamps via the US Post Office to the island of Saipan.

In September alone, CNMI Customs has intercepted smuggled methamphetamine worth more than US$2 million, including the latest bust.

But they said it was the first time they had ever encountered liquid meth at the border.
