A truck driver has died, apparently after a tree fell on his truck in North Canterbury.
Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 1 at Greta Valley, about 3.45 this afternoon.
The driver was the only occupant.
Police say early indications are that a tree fell on his truck while he was driving along Greta Road/SH1.
A car was forced onto the side of the road but was not directly involved, police said in a statement.
The road remains closed while police examine the crash site.
There are no diversions, with the Inland Road - Route 70 - closed by flooding and people are asked to avoid the area.
Police also said tonight that a person has died following a crash on State Highway 56 near Palmerston North at the weekend.
The crash, involving two cars, happened on Opiki Road on Saturday morning.
Two people were injured and one died in Palmerston North Hospital today.
Investigation of the crash is ongoing.
