Fiji's Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho has called on the public not to retaliate against police officers doing their duty.
The Commissioner told FBC News that a group of individuals had gone to the home of an officer and assaulted him.
He said the group included a man who had earlier been arrested for failing to pay a taxi fare.
Brigadier General Qiliho said before acting, people must think about the consequences of their actions.
The assault comes amid a number of court cases of police officers accused of using excessive force.
