16:29 pm on 13 November 2013

A judge in Samoa has warned offenders who sexually assault young girls that they can expect little leniency from the court.

Justice Vui Clarence Nelson issued the warning during sentencing of a 74-year-old man convicted of the indecent assault of a six-year-old relative.

The court sentenced him to 18 months in prison.

The judge said the incidence of sexual assault of young girls by mature males is increasing.
