The head of the government's trade group for China says a lot more more work needs to be done to ensure there is a better trade relationship.
The country is New Zealand biggest trading partner and the Government has the goal of increasing two-way trade to $20 billion in the next five years.
A recent trade mission to China led by Prime Minister John Key included the signing of a number of agreements on tourism, education, science and trade.
New Zealand Trade and Enterprise regional director for Greater China, Rod McKenzie, says but as successful as the trip may have been, a lot more work needs to be done by both private and government sectors to build relationships and thereby increase trade.
