Airliner crashes in Ukraine

A Malaysian airliner with 295 people on board has crashed in Ukraine on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, amid allegations it was shot down, Radio New Zealand reports.

All passengers on board are presumed to have perished.

Dozens of bodies are scattered around what is believed to be the wreckage of the jet near the village of Grabovo, which is under the control of separatist rebels.

The pro-Russian rebels have been fighting government forces in the region and Ukraine officials have accused them of shooting down the airliner.

The separatists are believed to have downed two Ukrainian military planes over the region in recent days but they have denied shooting down flight MH17, which had been due to enter Russian airspace when contact was lost.

Ukraine's president called the loss of the plane an "act of terrorism" as the rebels denied shooting it down. A rebel leader, Aleksandr Borodai, blamed the Ukrainian air force for shooting down the airliner, but Ukraine categorically denied it was responsible.
