Wellington’s Eyegum Music Collective are self-described as “a bunch of musicians, artists, fans and a lawyer who've got together with the aim of putting on awesome events.”
Joel Cosgrove, who is one of the curators for Eyegum, says that the collective came together as a result of some of Wellington’s key venues closing down last year.
“If no one else is going to facilitate our fun for us, I guess we got to facilitate it ourselves,” he says.
The result is a community vibe that brings bands and fans together, mainly at house parties, from the Wellington music scene.
The lack of a proper venue makes it a unique experience, says Ian ‘Blink’ Jorgensen, who has run his own venue Puppies and countless other notable events around the country including Camp A Low Hum.
He believes that playing in a house creates an entirely new aesthetic.
“It builds energy with the audience and that energy gets reflected upon the band, and shows are a million times better.”
Gussie Larkin and Ezra Simons headed along to some of those shows and talked to those involved with Eyegum to get a better idea.
