Former North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il ordered scientists to produce a massive quantity of nuclear bombs, documents show.

The secretive Communist state has repeatedly maintained that its uranium enrichment programme is designed solely for the purpose of generating power, despite widespread suspicion in the outside world.

The documents were compiled for North Korea's ruling Workers' Party and were revealed by newspapers in Japan, the ABC reports.

One of the documents shows an order from Kim Jong-Il demanding the production of a massive amount of nuclear weapons using uranium and plutonium.

The documents refer to inspections of uranium-enrichment facilities by American experts in November 2010, which followed plutonium bomb tests in 2006 and 2009.

Kim Jong-Il died in December last year.
