Large trucks with trailers will be able to drive over the Takaka Hill from tomorrow.
The vehicles have been unable to use State Highway 60 to Golden Bay since last month's storm badly damaged the road.
Cyclone Gita brought down multiple slips and washed out parts of the highway, which has since been opened to cars and light trucks at set times only.
Transport Agency manager Frank Porter said the damaged sections of road had been widened to accommodate the truck and trailer units.
He said they could use the road from midday tomorrow with the lunchtime freight convoys, and also with the morning and evening public convoys.
Mr Porter said an average of 1000 vehicles a day were now going over the Takaka Hill.
