Housing New Zealand is promising to have its earthquake damaged homes in Christchurch rebuilt by June, six months after it said the work would be completed.

The agency had promised to rebuild 700 homes by the end of last year, but missed that deadline.

It has already managed to complete repairs on 5000 other properties ahead of schedule.

From June, it will disband its Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Programme after completing what it's describing as the biggest investment in social housing in recent history.

It budgeted $350 million for the work, however the total cost has yet to be finalised.
