Papua New Guinea's Accident Investigation Commission, (AIC), is gathering information on a aircraft distress signal that was detected on Sunday near Port Moresby.

Chief Commissioner Hubert Namani said the AIC was informed by PNG Air Services Limited about the activation of an Emergency Locator Transmitter near Papa Lealea which is about 35 kilometres northwest of the capital.
In the event of an accident or upon manual activation by the pilot, an Emergency Locator Transmitter emits a distress signal, which aims to assist search and rescue activities.
However all aircraft expected to be in the area had been accounted for.
Namani said investigators were looking into whether an accident or serious incident could be confirmed.
"Coordination with Government authorities including Police is essential to facilitate the development of on-site activities," he said.
