An Australian Greens Senator says the country's new prime minister must show compassion and release the children held in detention in Nauru.
Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull must show leadership and compassion by releasing all children and families from Australian run detention camp on Nauru.
She says Australia is ready for compassion and it is time children were taken off of Nauru, once and for all.
Ms Hanson-Young says there has been shocking evidence about children being exposed to abuse from guards on Nauru and this is an opportunity for the new Prime Minister to draw a line in the sand.
She says the Abbott government administered some of the cruellest treatment towards refugees Australia has seen and it is time to turn a page.
