US diocese files for bankruptcy

09:15 am on 20 October 2009

A Catholic diocese in the US state of Delaware has filed for bankruptcy protection - a day before a court was due to begin hearing a sexual abuse damages claim from eight parishioners.

The church says the bankruptcy move was essential to make sure dozens of other victims of abuse didn't miss out on whatever cash might be available. But critics say it's just the church trying to duck responsibility.

Lawyer Steve Neuberger represents the eight parishioners who say they were abused by former priest Francis Deluca. He has 80 other clients waiting on the outcome.

He told Morning Report the Church's tactics have been driven by a new administrator.
