Two year target set for forming Palestinian state

07:41 am on 23 June 2009

Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has set a goal of establishing a Palestinian state within two years.

Mr Fayyad called on Palestinians to unite around the project of establishing a state and strengthening its institutions.

He says achieving that goal within two years is possible.

Mr Fayyad says Palestinians should win world support by building up all the institutions for the independent state they seek.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier this month that he is ready to accept the establishment of a Palestinian state, but only if it does not have an army or control of its own borders.
