Portview Resthome is owned by Filipino company Five Pillars Limited.
The company has told the Taranaki District Health Board the home was not financially sustainable beyond two weeks despite the DHB's contract with it until June.
Fred Ellis, 83, who has lived at Portview Resthome for six weeks, said residents, families and staff were shocked by the news, especially two residents who had been there for nearly 20 years.
"It was just stunned silence for a minute or two. And no one was saying anything.
"The little old ladies who had been here for many years, to be told that they had to take their hook in a fortnight."
Mr Ellis said he heard the resthome would be demolished to make way for luxury housing.
