The dogs of Christchurch will be strutting their stuff on stage this weekend in the first-ever Colombo Dog Fashion show.
As a way to help retailers who have had a hard time during the pandemic, 32 dogs will seek to wow the judges as they display the very latest in canine couture at the Colombo shopping precinct in Sydenham.
The Colombo owner Lilly Cooper told First Up after two years of Covid, the organisers wanted to do something different.
"Dog fashion accessories are a big thing nowadays and people love their dogs," she said.
Cooper said Sunday's show was probably the first-ever dog fashion show in New Zealand.
The organisers hoped to recreate the drama of a New York or Paris catwalk, albeit with dogs walking the runway to music.
Some dogs were going to take inspiration from their own personal struggles, walking to the tune of Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive', while others will be strutting to ABBA's Dancing Queen.
"We've got Bruiser, the beautiful black labrador, very confident - 'I'm too sexy' is his music; Rambo, the boxer, he's coming out to 'Get it on'," - Lilly Cooper
Cooper said the demand to participate in show was very high. She said next year's show would be run for four weeks.
The winning dog, and its owner will be awarded a luxury getaway at Matai Peak.
