The Electoral Commissioner Patilias Gamato has told The National that the funding would be needed from the government for polling and counting in July.

He said the money would pay for polling officials' allowances, transport such as helicopters, vehicle and boats to move teams to provinces.

Mr Gamato said funds had been released on a weekly basis out of an original allocation of $US87 million.

He said things were going well and he was quite happy with what the government had done in terms of supporting the election preparations.
