Air New Zealand's then chief executive Rob Fyfe pays homage to the victims of the Air New Zealand Airbus A320 that crashed off the French coast in 2008.

The minister responsible for re-entry, Andrew Little, said Mr Fyfe would give him a third-party perspective as well as provide another safeguard for the families and the public.

Mr Little said Mr Fyfe was well equipped for the role and has experience working with people who have suffered tragedy.

He said Mr Fyfe has already been involved with Pike River in the past, having 30 airline personnel to assist families immediately following the disaster in 2010.
