Drivers reminded not to leave pets or kids in hot cars

The Automobile Association is reminding drivers not to leave children or pets in their cars during the hot weather.

The SPCA warns that

Even with the windows slightly open, a car parked in the shade on a 30-degree day will heat up to almost 40 degrees in just 10 minutes, according to the SPCA.

It said a dog locked in a hot car could only handle temperatures of 40 degrees or more for a very short time before suffering irreparable brain damage - or even death.

AA spokesperson Dylan Thompson said in hot weather, a car could quickly get as hot as an oven, and pets or children should not be left in the car, even for a few minutes.
