Datacom has sold its Asian contact centre business which employs 850 people for $A20 million to US-based Convergys.

Datacom chief executive Jonathan Ladd said the business had grown to the point where it needed a huge injection of money to become globally competitive, and it decided to sell.

He says the proceeds will be reinvested in Datacom's technology businesses, cloud services and intellectual property in New Zealand and Australia, as well as its Asia systems business which is being retained.
