New top rank awarded to Fiji's former Police Commissioner

Reports from Fiji says the former Commissioner of Police has been promoted to the rank of Major General, one of the highest ranks in the Fiji Military Forces.

Fiji One News says the promotion of Brigadier General Iowane Naivalurua was gazetted last week.

The broadcaster reports the official has just completed a week's visit to New York leading the Fiji delegation to the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations.

He was in New Zealand In January as Fiji's Ambassador-at-Large, holding discussions with government departments about public sector reform.

Meanwhile the new commander of Fiji's military is due to be announced later this week.

The present commander and prime minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama is now due to hand over his command on Wednesday at a ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Barracks in Suva after the original Friday ceremony was postponed due to bad weather.
