Fiji exam papers leaked

11:41 am on 25 November 2003

Fiji has been hit by another scandal over the leaking of examination papers just as thousands of secondary school students have begun sitting public exams.

Reports say that some students were found to have this year's Fiji School Leaving Certificate mathematics paper at the weekend, well ahead of yesterday's scheduled examination.

The general secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union, Agni Deo Singh, says that students in one particular school were given the paper last Saturday.

Last week, students from two schools were found in possession of the English paper a day before they were due to sit the examination.

Teachers from other schools have expressed outrage at the leaks and called for the cancellation of the examinations, saying their integrity and credibility has been compromised.

Mr Singh has called on the ministry of education to set up an independent examination board whose members will not have an interest in the setting of the exam papers, to overcome what has now become an annual scandal.
