Lochte leaves Shanghai with 5 golds

07:38 am on 1 August 2011

The US swimming sensation Ryan Lochte was named swimmer of the meeting after claiming a 5th gold medal on the final night of the world championships, but he left Shanghai convinced he was still playing second fiddle to his great teammate Michael Phelps.

Lochte led throughout to win his last final, the 400 metres individual medley, and he was one of only two swimmers at the meeting to set a world record, sharing that honour with China's Sun Yang, who last night broke the long standing 1500 freestyle record of Australia's Grant Hackett.

Michael Phelps said he'd been less than fully committed to training for the championships, so he should be encouraged by his four gold medals, 12 months out from his last Olympics.
