Truck and trailer unit rolls into Waioeka Gorge river

Emergency services are responding to a serious crash in the Bay of Plenty's Waioeka Gorge.

A truck and trailer unit has rolled into the river off Waioeka Road.

Police said in a statement that the crash was reported to them just before midday and the driver, who was the single-occupant, had been airlifted to hospital in Gisborne in a serious condition.

Following the crash, Waioeka Road is down to one lane.

Police said the truck and trailer will be removed from the Waioeka River later today and this will likely involve a futher road closure.

The gorge forms part of State Highway 2 between Ōpōtiki and Gisborne and motorists are asked to continue to avoid the area.
