The anti-independence Caledonia Together party says it will put forward a former Congress president Gerard Poadja as its candidate for the French Senate election.
On 24 September, 170 seats in Paris are to be renewed, including the two reserved for New Caledonia.
Party leader says Mr Poadja is a Kanak from the main island of Grand Terre which is a departure from the past when Kanaks from the Loyalty Islands tended to attain senior positions in the anti-independence camp.
He was expected to share the election ticket with the incumbent Pierre Frogier, who was also a former Congress president.
The Senators are chosen by an electoral college made up of assembly members and mayors.
