A crew of 50 firefighters and volunteers is still working to contain a pile of burning woodchips at the Burwood Resource Recovery Park in Christchurch.
The fire started on Thursday afternoon and by yesterday had grown too large to safely put out.
The park's director, Gareth James, said good progress has been made and the fire was contained.
He said they are going to start smothering it with soil this afternoon, but it will take a few more days to burn itself out.
