Mayor says Cr not working for Gaddafi family

10:21 am on 3 November 2011

New Plymouth Mayor Harry Duynhoven says he's been assured one of his councillors was not working for the Gaddafi family in Libya.

John McLeod, who is a former SAS soldier, took a lengthy leave of absence in July and it has been suggested he has been carrying out private security work in Libya.

Last week, there were claims that New Zealanders were part of a group who helped Muammar Gaddafi's son escape.

Mr Duynhoven says Mr McLeod has refused to tell him where he has been, but has said he was not helping the Gaddafi family.
