Labour wants to woo regional voters

08:10 am on 23 January 2012

New Labour leader David Shearer says a major focus for the party in 2012 will be reconnecting with voters, particularly those in the regions.

Labour lost much support in provincial areas in the general election.

Mr Shearer told Morning Report it's quite clear the party did badly in the regions, with just 21% of the vote.

He said Labour needs to find out what people's needs are and to then build policies around those needs.

Mr Shearer said Labour will show voters it is listening and is prepared to change.

He said Labour must also build up its party structures in the regions as well.
