In a statement, the Ministry said there were 48 people with the coronavirus in hospital, seven of them in intensive care.

The cases are in hospitals in Auckland, Tauranga, Rotorua and Waikato.

Today's new community cases are in Northland (3), Auckland (30), Waikato (6), Rotorua (4), Tairāwhiti (2) and Canterbury (1).

The three new Northland cases are in the Hokianga area. All are from the same household and are linked to an existing case.

Five of the six new cases in the Waikato today are in Te Kūiti and one has a Palmerston North residential address. All are linked to previous cases.

Three of the four cases in Rotorua are close contacts of known cases, while the new case in Canterbury is also a close contact of another case and is currently isolating in the community.

The two cases in Tairāwhiti were publicly reported on Boxing Day but were only added to official numbers today due to data reporting issues.

The Impala Nightclub in Auckland's CBD has been categorised as a location of interest. People who were there between 26 December 11pm and 27 December 3am are advised to self-isolate and get tested immediately.

There were also eight cases identified at the border, with cases arriving from India, Australia, the United States and Turkey.

The number of Omicron cases identified at the border has risen from a total of 54 yesterday to 71 today.

There were 18 new community cases of Covid-19 and one further death in New Zealand reported yesterday.

There have now been 10,716 cases in the current outbreak and a total of 13,616 cases in New Zealand since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Yesterday, there were 279 first vaccine doses, 1917 second doses, 43 third primary doses and 2888 booster doses given.

The Ministry also said the Waikato DHB was only 505 doses away from having 90 percent of its population fully vaccinated. It will be the 9th DHB to achieve this milestone.

There were no unexpected wastewater detections to report today.
