A new report estimates the final weekend of the Rugby World Cup will generate $78.1 million for the Auckland economy.
The survey, undertaken by the Centre for the International Business of Sport at Coventry University, looked at spending in bars, shops and at bookmakers and money spent on company marketing.
Director Simon Chadwick predicts there will be a surge in fans from outside the city who will open their wallets during a once in a lifetime long weekend.
He says the climax of the tournament will be a revenue spinner because two games are being played at the weekend.
An earlier report by the centre estimated the tournament would inject just over $400 million into the Auckland economy and contribute $2 billion to the global sports economy.
