Maraea Marata Smith turned 36 on Friday - the same day she was found dead on Titoki Street after police were called to reports of a fight.
Smith lived in Gisborne, police said in a statement.
Police launched a homicide inquiry after she died on Titoki St on Friday night.
Acting detective senior sergeant Daniel Kirk said police were continuing to seek those involved and had been conducting reassurance patrols in the area.
Police said yesterday they believed the offenders included "specific groups of people" and it was not believed there was any risk to the wider public.
Kirk said police would like to speak with anyone who might have information about the incident or those involved.
